Cholesterol Diet
By
Dr. James Merchino, DC, MS, ND
Let’s talk today about a cholesterol lowering diet. What is a cholesterol lowering diet,
and can diet really make a difference? The truth is, 90% of all high cholesterol problems
can actually be resolved using the right diet and lifestyle program. This has sort of been
missing from the conversation. Here is what you have to do. It’s good to
try and eat very little, if any, saturated fat; that means getting your total saturated
fat down below 15 grams a day. The average North American has 70-80 grams of saturated
fat a day. What is the problem with that? It’s that eating saturated fat is what turns
on cholesterol production. Because you need cholesterol to transport that fat around the
body, the extra cholesterol gets lodged in the artery walls and you end up with vascular
disease. The same thing happens when you’re eating
food that has a lot of trans fat, and again with very deep fried foods. Even if you’re
on a vegetarian type of a diet, something like eating deep fried potato chips or even
deep fried sweet potatoes, you’re running the same risk to a large degree.
There are foods that help to lower cholesterol, like beans and peas and other foods that contain
soluble fiber which literally drag cholesterol out of your body. Consuming more soy products
also lowers cholesterol. And you have to watch that you don’t over consume sugary foods
because some of those extra sugars will get converted into fat and will turn on cholesterol
production as a side effect. To understand the details for how to make
this happen in a very practical and realistic way, I suggest you immediately download my
