>> MW - Well, today we are at the FicZone and we were lucky enough to find Angel Giráldez one of Corvus Belli's professional painters who you will surely know for his great work on Infinity miniatures.
>> MW - We are quite surprised as it's we do not usually see Angel attending these kind of events, so, hello Angel!
>> AG - Hello.
>> MW - How is it that you are here?
>> AG - The company decided to send my colleague Bostria and me to this event.
>> AG - He will conduct a seminar on Infinity novelties, and during his seminar he is going to drop a bombshell, and I will conduct painting demonstrations, on how to paint Infinity miniatures. 00:00:59.963,00:01:09.0.34 >> AG - This morning at the event I did a class on painting faces, I just finished a class con non-metallic metal,
>> AG - and tomorrow I will conduct a seminar on airbrushing and regular brush, and in the afternoon another masterclass, this one on rust, leather and weathering.
>> MW - So you're not here to have a look around, are you?
>> AG - No, I'm definitely not here to take a stroll. I'm a bit stressed out, people stop me to sign books, and my voice is already a bit worn out.
>> MW - That's normal, a star painter of the likes of Angel Giráldez that doesn't usually attend to this sort of events
>> AG - I actually don't have a lot of time, due to work and also the company increased production and there are more and more miniatures to paint, and it's quite stressful.
>> AG - And I also have to paint some stuff for a future project, a future project of the company, we hired another painter, that is helping me out. His name is Daf.
>> MW - Well, hi Daf, those of us that follow the Infinity forums, already know that there's a new painter, Daf, who is doing a great job
>> AG - When we decided to hire a new painter I thought of Daf because he was already an temporary worker, and we can see that he's a person with loads of potential.
>> AG - With just a few classes and tips he's going to take off to a very high level, as you can see on the last novelties, that there is hardly any difference between mine and his.
>> MW - I was going to let it pass by, but I wouldn't be forgiven if I did. You just spoke about a new product from Corvus, haven't you?
>> AG - Yes, well, my colleague Bostria will talk about that at his seminar.
>> MW - So, tomorrow we'll get a real bombshell, won't we?
>> AG - Maybe.
>> MW - Well you don't know anything about it but tomorrow we'll see, probably this video will be shown after another video that we will record obviously with Bostria and in which he will tell us live what is this new product from Corvus Belli.
>> MW - As you don't want to tell us let's carry on about you.
>> AG - That's not my area.
>> MW - Ok, very politically correct. Since when are you a painter Angel?
>> AG - I entered the company eleven years ago, back then it was a very small company, there were three partners and I started out as a founder, packer, cutter and painter.
>> AG - Before there only was the Corvus Belli historical 15 and 28 mm product range.
>> MW - So, from the real start then.
>> AG - Yes. I think the company is 13 years old, I entered two years after. I think it was founded, I think I'm not sure, in the year 2001 and I entered in the year 2003. My first jobs were smelting, packing and painting.
>> MW - You were doing a bit of everything
>> AG - Yes, before we were only 4 people and we did everything.
>> MW - We know you, and people know you for your work at Corvus, but you haven't only worked for Corvus, have you?
>> AG - Yes I have painted for other companies. Apart from my work at Corvus Belli, in 2007 I founded my own painting studio, separate from my work at Corvus Belli, in my free time.
>> AG - I painted for Privateer Press, Studio McVey, Sphere Wars
>> MW - Yeah, not worked for anybody... but for great companies who put their trust in you.
>> AG - Yes I started my blog, and slowly companies started to contact, up to the point where I couldn't take it all on,
>> AG - and so this year I decided to paint exclusively for Corvus Belli, and leave the rest aside for the moment.
>> MW - Of course, we have a new product that needs to be made progress on, we don't know yet what it is.
>> AG - And now in my free time I am developing a personal product.
>> MW - My oh my, bombshell after bombshell. And this product that is yours, can you tell us anything about it?
>> AG - Not really! Well it's being developed, and at the next Gen Con in the United States I'm going to show a preview.
>> AG - It's a personal project, developed and funded by me and will be distributed through two companies
>> MW - When are the Gencon?
>> AG - In August.
>> MW - So were to be intrigued until August?
>> AG - Yes, I will show a promotional video.
>> MW - Well let's see, cause we are delivering bombshell after bombshell, and the truth is that...
>> AG - It's been in development since October last year, I've got a great team, strong. To me it's like a personal dream come true, and now I have the means to do it.
>> MW - As your talking about that, something people have been waiting for a long time from you, is a book. Now that you are dedicated to step-by-steps on your channels
>> AG - No, no. People do not demand that.
>> MW - People don't demand that, I think they do, and have been doing so for a long time, and I think you already have it all.
>> AG - I don't think it would sell. I don't think so. A book of mine about painting I don't think is something that people are asking for.
>> MW - No, we have already had two seminars with him, full house both, and hundreds of people left out, I think nobody wants to know how Angel Giraldez paints.
>> AG - It's not that important I think.
>> MW - This might be the bombshell! Who knows if we're right! Well, let's not get Angel more nervous.
>> MW - Angel, we've seen in these seminars that your techniques are fast, effective I suppose that you haven't always painted like that, have you?
>> AG - No, my work methods have been evolving year after year. It's very different working for a company, there you work under time limits and you give a high level under the minimum time possible. So you develop techniques and methods to achieve a perfect balance of quality and time.
>> AG - My method is airbrush and brush. With the airbrush I can acheive well-polished and fast finishing touches and nearly perfect fadings, and with the brush I can outline and use the brush where the airbrush doesn't reach.
>> MW - Always self-taught or do you pay attention to other painters or taken any lessons?
>> AG - No no. All is based on my experience, the best way to learn is by practise. The more you paint, the more you will improve.
>> MW - Also the pressure and demand level required at the company is higher and higher. How many miniatures do you have to paint in a month, or since a novelty comes out until the next one does?
>> AG - The ones I am given. There is no fixed amount, those that I can squeeze in a month. There are months that I paint less because there are bank holidays, long weekends, but...
>> MW - So that people can get the picture of your painting speed, how long would it take you to paint a normal infantry miniature with no extra hard work involved.
>> AG - About between eight to fifteen hours. When it comes up to fourteen or fifteen hours it's because it has some freehand, lines, numbers, things more complicated of painting. It also takes me longer when the miniature has many colours.
>> AG - With Tariq I took longer because I applied texture to the leather, an green ochre armour, the coat is green on some parts, the sword is turquoise, turbant is red, also the figure is larger
>> MW - That's normal. Obviously not all of us have your ability of self-learning and at a level I do not understand how it can get higher every time, but what is your advice?
>> MW - As you have seen during this event that people want to learn, they have been painting for some time already and just can't get that last push to take off. What is your advice for those people who have started but still can't get there?
>> AG - Just to have patience. You can't achieve things in only three days. Everything takes it time, and the more time you dedicate to it, the more you will improve. Sometimes people think, oh I'll atend one of these lessons and I'm going to paint like Angel.
>> AG - You are totally wrong. Here you are going to learn the colours, because I teach colours and deliver recipies to make it easier for people. I don't teach colour theory because I think it's better to facilitate the recipes, so they can practise and learn from practise.
>> MW - The truth is that is has been very instructive but obviously I don't think anyone will leave these lessons painting like Giraldez. I'll try, if not I'll hand my miniature over to him to finish it off for me, although I don't think that's going to be possible.
>> MW - Talking about great works, of which of the latest Infinity miniatures painting work are you most proud of?
>> AG - I haven't one in particular, I feel proud of all the Infinity miniature, it's like my child. I entered the company eleven years ago, and there you can see my whole evolution.
>> AG - And up till last December it was all mine, now Daf is also painting but I have great affection for the whole range, I don't have a prefered one. It's the whole picture of my work.
>> MW - So yo don't want to choose one
>> AG - I mean, there are nice miniatures like the last ***, the Iguano, but none are my preferred ones. Also, I can not dedicate all the time I would wish to painting them so the level you see on my miniatures is high but I can give even more.
>> AG - If I had enough time.
>> MW - Obviously when working against the clock the work is different, of course.
>> AG - I always say that my painting is commercial, not for competition or anything like that, it's purely commercial.
>> MW - For being commercial we all think that your level is very not good but excellent, and as an excellent painter as most of us consider you, and as you yourself mentioned it,
>> MW - why don't you leave some tips or recipes on painting to those who couldn't attend today so their painting quality can improve?
>> AG - The best trick is practise. I can't give you any other secret, because there isn't one. Practise, practise, practise. I can't think of a better piece of advice to give to you.
>> MW - You're right, practising is the best way to obtain results
>> AG - Yes, practising, and looking at photos, and if you like a certain painter watch his step-by-steps and try to copy or write to him so he can tell you things.
>> AG - My facebook page is is a good contact, a good feedback, you ask me and I answer you. Sometimes there are mails that get lost, because
>> MW - You will receive a great amount of them
>> AG - I don't get one mail a day, I get loads of them, and if I'm painting it's impossible to answer.
>> AG - I always try to answer, but for example, I'm here this weekend, surely I'll... well looking a my phone, I see the amount of mails, and maybe, some will go unanswered.
>> MW - In addition to painting, you paint to play... and do you play?
>> AG - Not at all.
>> MW - No we know that you hardly have time to breathe, but have you played or not even that?
>> AG - Not really, I never was captivated by strategy games. When I was younger I played HeroQuest, but I haven't..,
>> MW - Nothing, nothing. I'm going to show you a game I know. It's called Infinity and it really rocks! Come over here, I'm gonna teach you how to play, it's great!
