The Judy Lazarus Transition Centre is an intervention designed to help male prisoners in the last 12 months of their sentence,
basically establish themselves in the community in terms of their resources but also their own confidence , skills and ability to assist them with getting on the positive and pro social life.
My role is supervising and monitoring the staff that intensively case manage the guys. But also managing any incidences that we have
staff that intensively case manage the guys. But also managing any incidences that we have,
managing disciplinary process and oversighting the case management.
Meeting on a monthly basis with the men and having that conversation with them about what their goals are and how they are progressing,
what the challenges have been, how they are managing those challenges and giving some recognition for their progress and what they've been able to achieve in that time that they've been here.
People that want to work here are passionate about case management and I'm passionate about helping people be better at case management,
so I get to do that and put a lot of time and energy into doing that here.
I really love that side of that. And the men themselves just seeing them develop, seize opportunities, have light bulb moments, have those step backwards but then learn something from that and move forwards again.
I had one of the guys here recently who is really keen and studying a community services diploma and really wants to get in to do drug and alcohol work. We were able to sort out
We were able to sort out a community work placement for him in that field. Seeing him there on that first day, we actually cycled out there together, and we were cycling back and I said,
"how was that for you" and he said, "this is where I get to be the best version of myself". That is the stuff that does it for me
and that is a really cool experience and I like doing that sort of thing. That's a good day for me.
