The world's major powers are calling on North Korea to take another path.
The United States, Russia and Japan have vowed to maintain their tough stance against Pyongyang
despite its bellicose threats.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
The United States says North Korea can make different choices regarding its actions.
U.S. State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland was speaking Thursday after reports
emerged Pyongyang had moved what appeared to be a mid-range Musudan missile to its east
coast.
"The DPRK knows what it needs to do, if it wants to make a different choice. If it wants
to have support from the international community, economically in terms of supporting its people,
it's got to come back into compliance with its international obligations.
The President's been clear, the Secretary's been clear that if they make a different choice,
we will respond."
Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich said Pyongyang's decision to pursue
a nuclear program "radically complicates prospects" to resume the six-party talks.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia says it is completely against North
Korea going nuclear.
"We are categorically against Pyongyang's indifference to the UN Security Council's
resolutions that form the base in the sphere of nuclear non-proliferation."
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary said Tokyo would not be "pushed around" by provocative
statements out of Pyongyang and warned the regime's actions were not in the interests
of the North Korean people.
"This is really same old, same old here. North Korea has done this many times in the past.
However, we feel North Korea's daily provocation statements are extremely deplorable."
So, it seems that, for now, Washington, Moscow and Tokyo are sticking to their guns, and
are refusing to cave in to North Korea's aggressive behavior.
