I had early side effects from colon cancer. I had been relatively healthy since the surgery.
I was off work for about three months. I am a police officer, when I say off work, I mean
I was off work and went back to work late duty. About three months later, I was able
to go back to full duty which means I was back on routine patrol. My current function,
my current role at the police department, I am a police sergeant, I am a patrol sergeant
which means that I am on the road like any other police officer. So for me to get back
on the road within six months was a goal of mine, I did not want to be off work for 12
months, 18 months, I mean that was important to get back to my normal lifestyle, my normal
living, to be back with my family, my children. I was able to start exercising within I believe
two months and from that point of exercising, I was able to change my lifestyle, what I
mean by that is I started maintaining a healthy lifestyle by exercising on a routine basis,
try and eat the right foods. I have recently got involved with cycling and some philanthropic
projects. One of the things I have taken on is I rode the Pan Ohio which is a bike ride
from Cleveland to Cincinnati to raise money for the American Cancer Society and I find
that to be very rewarding because not only I am riding for myself, I am riding for everybody
else. Every other cancer patient out there that is battling, who has lost the battle
of cancer by raising funds that help research and hope lodges. So, I found that to be very
rewarding. My three year anniversary of my surgery is coming up August 19. Ironically,
I scheduled my physical that same day, August 19, 2010 was my surgery, August 19, 2013 will
be my three year anniversary when I scheduled my physical. I know that in the way I feel,
I know that everything will be okay because the symptoms that I had prior to my surgery,
I am not feeling and I am not experiencing, so I believe that for me, everything is working
out well, the oncotype DX gave me a peace of mind and maintaining healthy lifestyle,
exercising and eating right has been of total benefit to me and I look forward to maintaining
a long healthy life.
