One of the really significant misconceptions
in the addiction treatment field is it's just about the
addiction and that there's a separation between
mental health and addiction.
They go hand in hand. Somebody who is
mentally health is able to deal with
stress and emotional distress
in ways that enhances their ability to function, opposed to
using substances is to avoid it or to get
some emotional relief. So you really do not have
addiction treatment without mental health treatment.
That is a payback to the employer because
they're not only just getting the same employee who's just not using.
They're getting a more fully functioning adult
who returns to work in addition to the fact that they're not using.
Really go out of your way
to not think of this person as
defective or cursed
or whatever the words have been historically about people struggling
with addiction. They are just human beings who
need your support, need your compassion and need you to
help them
become more aware of what they're doing.
