The Greek islands, Santorini especially, are places where you can cut loose and feel free.
The locals know you're there to have a good time, and want you to have one. There are
just a few things a visitor ought to keep in mind, in order to keep the local mood good.
First, Greece is like any other tourist destination where a little tip can go a long way, so hotel
workers, from the concierge to the maid who makes up your room, will appreciate a little
extra as a tip. Many of these people work day after day for the whole six-month summer
season, so a little consideration can get you that extra bit of good service.
Second, even though most hotels accept all the major credit cards, it's always prudent
to find out beforehand that they do to avoid any uncomfortable situations! The hotel staff
are generally eager to help with any red tape problems such as a lost passport or wallet.
If you can pay cash, all the better, as it will get you more smiles and service all round.
Third, many Aegean islanders like their tourists to be restrained in their behaviour. So nude
all-night parties in your room, for example, won't go down well. It's okay to party-- as
long as you don't create extra work for the room staff.
Then, once you have your morning coffee, it is time to get serious about exploring Santorini's
cultural scene, as we'll see.
