Welcome! Today we’ll take a look at PsycTHERAPY, the American Psychological Association’s database of
psychotherapy demonstration videos. PsycTHERAPY contains more than 300 videos of psychotherapy demonstrations that show
clinicians working with individuals, couples, and families. All of the videos are of spontaneous, unscripted psychotherapy demonstrations.
PsycTHERAPY will be updated biannually, with 40-80 hours of new content.
PsycTHERAPY is only available on the APA PsycNET platform. If you access other APA databases on PsycNET, you can search
PsycTHERAPY alongside them. I’ll do a quick search to demonstrate.
The search results for PsycTHERAPY are highlighted on the left-hand side of the initial search results screen. This next screen shows
us some basic information about each of the videos, including an abstract. We’ll take a look at this one.
Since this is the first time today that I’ve used PsycTHERAPY, I’m presented with the Terms of Use. As these are unscripted psychotherapy
demonstrations, we want to ensure that people viewing the videos are doing so for educational or research purposes.
You’ll only see this once per browser session.
Underneath the video you’ll see some familiar controls – a play/pause button, a timeline, which you can use to skip to any point in the video,
and a volume control. Just above the video are two options that allow you to control its size: The first will enlarge it,
the second will make it full screen. To the right of the video is the transcript pane. The transcript is synced to play in time with the
video. If you’d like to turn this feature off, use the “sync” checkbox at the top right of the transcript. Unchecking this box will allow you to
move forward and back in the transcript, while the video continues playing.
Across from the transcript sync box are tabs for two other panes. One provides the video abstract, and another displays any clips of the
video that you have permission to view. We’ll take a look at clips in another tutorial. For now, let’s move back up towards the top of the screen
and take a look at the management options, which you’ll find listed left to right underneath the video title.
First is the see more details link, which displays the abstract and metadata for the video.
The transcript link opens a full-screen view of the transcript.
The next link, APA Citation, opens a pop-up with the APA formatted citation for the video.
Next is view thumbnails. This allows you to look at snapshots of the video taken at regular intervals.
The link option opens a box with a permanent link to the video that you can share with colleagues or classmates.
The last option in this row is Print Screen, which does exactly what it says!
Just under this row of management options is another search box – this one will search just the transcript. Results are highlighted in orange
along the timebar above the video, and in the transcript. You can click on any of the hash marks in the time bar to skip to that result, or
use the forward and back arrows at the far right to move between the transcript results. Now that we’ve explored the video player page,
let’s take a look at the main navigation for PsycTHERAPY, in the blue bar at the top of the screen. First is the search link – this opens up a
full search form with a variety of options. You’ll notice that some of the search fields have a blue and white icon to the right of the search box.
Clicking this icon will open up a list of terms for you to choose from. There are also two sections at the bottom of the form that enable you to
search for videos where the therapist or the client has particular characteristics of interest to you.
Note that you can also find videos using the Quick Search box at the far right of the navigation bar, which is always available. You
can search all fields, therapy topic, therapeutic approach, therapist, video title, and transcripts. In addition to searching, you can browse the
videos in four different ways: by title, therapist, therapy topic, or therapeutic approach.
Just hover over or click the Browse link to open the list.
The playlists link will display all of the playlists that are available to you. Playlists can contain videos, clips and other materials. We’ll talk
more about playlists in a separate tutorial. Lastly is the help link, which will display the help screens for PsycTHERAPY, as well as
contact information should you need further assistance.
Thank you! This concludes our introduction to PsycTHERAPY. If you have additional questions, please take a look at the FAQ,
