A CAR HOPS UP ONTO THE
SIDEWALK.... AND HITS TWO KIDS
ON THEIR BIKES.
THIS HAPPENED YESTERDAY
AFTERNOON .... ON WESTWOOD
AVENUE... IN SOUTH FAIRMOUNT.
THAT'S WHERE JOHN LONDON IS LIVE
TONIGHT .... WITH WHY POLICE ARE
HAVING TROUBLE.... PIECING IT
ALL TOGETHER. JOHN.
RECONSTRUCTION IS TIME-
CONSUMING. WHAT HAPPENED HERE
ALONG 1600 WESTWOOD AROUND THIS
TIME YESTERDAY CRIES OUT FOR
EXPLANATION. IT MIGHT BE DAYS OR
WEEKS BEFORE THEY HAVE
TOXICOLOGY RESULTS FROM THE
URINE SAMPLE.
24-hours later, police are no
closer to figuring out why the
car left the roadway. Two boys
riding their bicycles on the
sidewalk were hit. The 11
year-old got
patched up and released last
night. 9 year-old Jalontae is
doing better in the hospital
today. His mother at wit's end
about how it happened.
(Lai-Lonni White - Jalontae's
Mother) ("You came up on the
curb. That's, I just want
answers, I want that person who
did it.") Police are inspecting
the car to see if any mechanical
defect contributed to the crash.
A urine sample was taken to
judge impairment.
(Lt. Bruce Hoffbauer - Traffic
Unit) ("We want to see if the
driver had anything in her
system that would have lead to
this crash happening because the
car left the roadway, went onto
the sidewalk. There was no other
cars. It
was kind of a strange course of
events.") The driver is 36. So
far, she has not produced proof
of insurance or a valid license.
Which adds to the suspicion.
(Aisha White - Jalontae's Aunt)
("Don't drive. You need to stop
doin' what you're doin'. It's
not good, it's not safe cause
there's kids out here. Not just
kids, it's people.") Westwood
Avenue feeds downtown from the
west side, a series of s curves
heavily traveled at times.
However, at the time of the
crash, police found no unusual
conditions.
(Lt. Bruce Hoffbauer - Traffic
Unit) ("It's kind of strange
that the car would leave the
roadway and strike these two
boys on the sidewalk. I don't
know of an accident on my career
in that area where a car left
the roadway up onto the
sidewalk.") Police have ruled
out excessive speed as a factor.
What they find through
reconstruction and toxicology
will be critical to any
conclusion. If it's a mechanical
malfunction, it goes down as an
accident. If impairment, it
could turn into a felony. When
contacted today, the woman at
the wheel told us "I don't have
anything to say right now."
ACCORDING TO POLICE, THAT WOMAN
WAS DRIVING HER MOTHER-IN-LAW'S
CAR AT THE TIME. A 7 YEAR-OLD
WAS IN THE BACK SEAT. BOTH WERE
WEARING SEAT BELTS, BOTH UNHURT.
LIVE IN SOUTH FAIRMOUNT, JOHN
LONDON, WLWT NEWS FIVE.
ONCE POLICE HAVE COMPLETED THEIR
INVESTIGATION...
THEY'LL PRESENT WHATEVER
EVIDENCE THEY HAVE... TO THE
PROSECUTOR FOR HIS EVALUATION.
