malcolm gladwell as the author of blank out wires that fifteen-point and a
couple of other books and he's going to argue on may eighth that college
football should be banned
at the slate intelligence squared live debate in new york city and basically
the argument that he's going to make is listen
uh... what we have here it is a situation that we are finding out more
and more about how dangerous it is for college football players to uh... wasn't
that long term because of the brain injuries some of the sunken casa brain
injuries one after another that can take place from the impact of the tackling
they're not getting paid
and the more that parents find out about how risky behavior it is
parents are not even going to let their kids start playing football
what's your thought on this list that they sell it
well i think it's completely ridiculous uh... i don't think
anyone is going to change
change the way things are i mean
the college football it's is almost more popular and uh... then the n_f_l_ it's
there's so much money involved are so many colleges involved powerful colleges
uh...
biologist i mean i understand wrist coming from but i don't see how
anything's gonna change moment on the argument that malcolm gladwell is going
to make is that he thinks the decisive factor is going to be the head injury
issue colleges are going to start getting sued and they're going to have
to decide whether they can afford the legal exposure of even having
a college football team
uh... what what you thought
yeah i think uh...
they're made started the lawsuits of which would be one factor i also think
that
if the evidence uh... becomes very clear as to the brain damage that's caused by
this
and there's a good you know p_r_ campaign of getting this information out
to parents parents will want their kids to play as we've mentioned
and uh... then it's gonna start to happen that you know this or becomes
less popular both
to play and full watch serrano course of you know
twenty thirty forty years i could see the sport becoming
uh... unpopular what people will point out is not a look at boxing ultimate
fighting there's just as much risk of head injury there we talk about the the
punch drunk syndrome in the entire thing
the difference is that they're getting paid but there's a counter-argument to
that which is to get to the point where you actually get paid for those things
you've got to do it for a while for free you have to start training at the start
getting good at it you don't get paid for the beginning so there is still this
period where people are choosing to do it for no money at risk of injury
so that that may not be the best argument is important boxing in horse
racing have intended but their vastly less popular as time goes
not necessarily because of the injuries and and that's right and and that lack
of humane nature to it
but they are in what many people are calling an irreversible albee it slow
decline
well army football's more popular than it has ever been
and just look at what it
baseball
i guess it has declined in popularity but his baseball in the doorway on
things i was just part of the doorway here but none of those have this kind of
confirm link that you will get you you are signifi you can get injured all in
all of those yeah together i mean i think they all stars along with
americans love football
the claim a simple wat i wanna go too much into this because desiring from
edge of sports and serious acts and radio is going to be here on may eighth
the day of this debate to give us his thought on this and he's
uh... really are go-to guy on sports we'll have the time yet it is to say i
can't disagree with the idea that
as uh... an outright
unchanging rule americans love football they they didn't before existed which
was what hundred years of
the existence of the country
they came to love it
um... things change boxing was the most that uh... watch sport uh... eighty
years ago for from baseball now as we were talking about earlier before the
show
people hardly watch pay-per-view matches anymore so
i don't think that it's an unchanging thing right now it's the most popular
sport but of a really powerful p_r_ campaign about brain damage could change
that in the next four years
or it will talk to you but there is i read about it on may eighth let's take a
break they spoke dot com slash day the packing show we'll take a break and be
back to talk to robert apple bomb just just after this lot to discuss
david madman shelves and david jacqueline dot com
