The definition of arthritis is a joint disorder that involves inflammation of one or more
joints. Just like us, dogs can suffer from arthritis.
Canine arthritis is actually quite common, estimated to affect around 20% of all dogs.
There is more than one form of dog arthritis but osteoarthritis is the most common one.
Dog arthritis is most common among older dogs as normal wear and tear takes its toll on
the dogs' joints. Age is though not the only risk factor for
arthritis in dogs. Abnormal stress on joints and cartilage, especially during puppyhood,
can result in joint health problems later in life. Dislocation of the kneecap or shoulder,
obesity, and canine hip dysplasia are also common causes for dog arthritis.
Osteoarthritis in dogs is progressive and permanent long-term deterioration of the cartilage
surrounding the joints. The damage to the cartilage can cause bone-on-bone contact,
making movements extremely painful. Common dog arthritis symptoms include:
Limping or favoring a leg Stiff or sore joints
Difficulties moving, sitting or standing Hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs
Sleeping more, being less alert Decreased activity level, less interest in
play Attitude or behavioral changes
Weight gain There are some high quality supplements available
that can help dogs with arthritis. Dog arthritis supplement do not cure arthritis but they
offer arthritic dogs much needed relief. Good quality supplements for dogs with arthritis
can help to heal damaged cartilage, prevent joint inflammation, and relief joint pain.
In the worst cases, the dog may need to have a surgery or go on NSAID medication. Both
include some risk of side effects. Good quality dog joint supplement can help you to delay,
even prevent, the need for more invasive arthritis treatment.
