[K. Elliott]Hi, I’m Kady Elliott, and this is
the Commencement Special Edition of IUPUI’s The Spot. Congratulations to IUPUI’s 2009 graduating
class. Starting in 2008 all graduates receive a
special gift when they shake their Dean’s hand. The gift is chosen from a competition among
Herron students. This year 13 students entered the competition, and we spoke with the winner.
[C. Welman] We had a sort of a quick, juried presentation of our paintings. We each did in
front of our piece, and presented our theme for what the essence of IUPUI meant to us. My
painting is about the idea of IUPUI as a walkway, where, where we're standing, it leads us into
the city of Indianapolis and beyond, to our future, and what inspired me was the walkways on
campus, or the gerbil tubes, as we tend to call them.
I started with a sort of a natural wood that's compressed, because it's a natural sort of
feeling that I like and then I did a sketch from Herron of the Indianapolis cityscape that
I could see, and painted that. I applied colors of IUPUI, the red and the gold, and then
changed them to suit the painting's mood, finally adding brighter colors on top to really
help things really go back in space or come forward.
In hindsight, I really think of it as a great reminder to keep on trying, to put yourself
out there, even if it's not art, if it's your writing, your job skills, just because those who
keep on trying are the ones who are going to succeed.
[K. Elliott] Thousands of students were eligible to graduate this Mother’s Day Weekend, and The
Spot was there to ask them about their IUPUI experience and what their plans are after
graduation. [N. Zanville] At IUPUI, I’m going to pursue
doctoral studies, hopefully combining nursing and some mind/body medicine. I’ve been here in
the 18-month accelerated program, it’s been pretty wonderful. I’ve networked with a lot of
great people, the academics have been really strong, and I really, I have to say I’ve enjoyed
every moment of it. It’s been awesome. [O. Bratton] I’m going to go teach pre-school.
It’s actually a nonprofit organization, and I’m also going to work on my Mary Kay business,
which I just started in October. I’d assumed the first two years were just like any college, but
during the School of Education time they had really great teachers and…
[R. Varma] I’ll be joining my masters in biostats. [J. Chung] I’m currently working as a mol
d inspector and I’ll probably go for a masters as well.
[A. Boyton] Find a job! And then go on and get my masters maybe in a year. I’m very interested
in St. Vincent’s. [J. Gay-Laranja] I’m currently teaching special
ed preschool and I plan to continue teaching special ed preschool. Nope, I’m pretty happy
with my job, so I think I’m going to continue doing that. If something opens up in the area of
ESL, I might do that. [D. Kaufman] Well, right now since I got my
associates I’m going to continue on to get my bachelors, so I’ll continue on to work in the
Purdue School of Engineering and Technology as well as working for a design company for design,
and I’ll also continue teaching as a math coach and reading coach to help out the community.
[K. Elliott] Thank you for watching the Special Commencement Edition of IUPUI’s The Spot, and we
hope to see you next semester at jagtv.iupui.edu
