There’s no place in the world like the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health
in Bethesda, Maryland. The Clinical Center is the world's largest hospital devoted exclusively
to clinical investigation. About 1,200 physicians, dentists and researchers, work alongside more
than 600 nurses and 450 allied health-care professional. On any given day, specialists
– all under one roof – may be conducting research on musculoskeletal and skin diseases;
cancer; dental and craniofacial disorders; eye disorders; heart, lung, and blood diseases;
infectious diseases; medical genetics; mental health; or neurological disorders. Each year,
the Clinical Center cares for about 6,000 inpatients and 10,000 outpatients – all
of which are participants in research studies. Most often to become a patient in a study,
a person is referred to the Clinical Center by a physician. If accepted, that patient
becomes the Clinical Center’s partner in the search for new drug, device or intervention.
All the while, the care they receive is world-class and at no cost to them. It is a national resource,
the Clinical Center’s 240-bed hospital, that makes it possible to rapidly translate
scientific observations into new approaches for diagnosing, treating and preventing disease.
And it’s the Center’s vision to lead the global effort in training today’s investigators
and discovering tomorrow’s cures. That’s why there is no place in the world
like the Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland – America’s Research Hospital. Learn more
