Hello, everyone! My name is Tiffany Ortega and I'll be your instructor this semester. I want to welcome you to our online History and Social Science Course for 3rd graders.
This is my school...Del Rio Elementary School in Oceanside. I've been teaching elementary school for sixteen years. But teaching online is a new experience for me. One that I am excited to share with you.
Although I grew up in Northern Mississippi...
I have lived in Southern California since 1990. I live in beautiful sunny Oceanside.
with my husband Rene, who is also a teacher
and our four children: Jake, Cristina, Daniel, and Gabriela
We also have a dog named Daisy, who is Boston Terrier
a cat named Orion, who loves quilts
and a Chinese Water Dragon named Duncan.
I love being a teacher!
I feel like I have the best job on Earth!
But, when I'm not teaching...I love to spend time with my family.
I also really enjoy reading
AND, I love to make quilts
I am so excited that we will be able to explore the rich and interesting history of the beautiful State of California.
This semester we will be using the digital textbook created by Harcourt called Reflections.
We will begin by discussing California's amazing geography
We will then learn about the local tribes of American Indians, their languages and their customs.
Next, we will explore how California was settled and how California's communities were built.
We will discuss aspects of the United States government as a democracy that relies on participations from all of its citizens.
We will also learn about the principles that we share that are found in our documents, landmarks, symbols, and long-standing beliefs.
Finally, we will explore how citizens depend on one another and on other sources to produce, buy, and sell goods and services.
You will use a variety of tools this semester to demonstrate your knowledge on many different topics. If you aren't familiar with some of these programs...don't fret.
We will have mini-lesson Mondays where we will practice creating in different programs before you need to use them for assignments.
I can hardly wait to meet all of you and see some of the things that you create!
I look forward to our first unit which will open next Monday morning.
I'll see you all online!
