As mentioned in the Assignment Basics tutorial, safe assignments check submissions for
plaigarism, checking against a vast library of resources and against the institutional database containing student papers.
This tutorial will guide you through creating a safe assignment
Instructors cannot include an assignment sheet or rubrics with a safe assignment
Only one file per user can be associated with the assignment because it is submitted to the plagiarism check tool
Instead, instructors can upload an "ITEM" in the content area
with the appropriate assignment sheet or rubrics and call it Assignment Instructions
They could then set up the safe assignment as the submission link
To create a safe assignment, access a content area from the course menu
Hover over Assessmentsl | Safe Assignment
Enter Name, Points Possible and Instructions (can refer to detailed instructions in the content area before this submission link)
Make the assessment available
Track number of views (optional) - remember, this is optional and tracks the number of times each person accesses the item;
we suggest you use this sparingly as the data stored for this item will slow down the performance of your course
Availability dates (optional) - if you decide to use this to restrict access to the submission link, you MUST use both display after and display until
Draft – this allows the students to submit a draft, which is not added to the institution database for comparison to other student papers;
this will eliminate a match to the student's own final paper
Draft is essentially checking for straight plaigarism against resources
Urgent Checking – this setting means that the instructor prefers the assignment to be processed quicker than normally processed
Student Viewable – allows students to view the Safe Assignment report on their paper when it is ready.
We suggest that you consider leaving this set to No until you have had a chance to review the safe assignment report and grade the assignment.
If the report includes issues that have been dismissed by you,
the students may contact you out of concern before you are ready to discuss them.
At any time, you can modify the assignment and turn this setting to Yes, typically once the assignment is graded.
Announcement – you can have an announcement created to notify the students that the Safe Assignment is available to them.
Click Yes and fill in the Subject and Message.
If you have used date restriction, the announcement will be visible once the assignment is visible for student submission.
Click Submit when finished.
