Latest Facebook Privacy Changes – Sept 2011
Hi, Ken Burgin here from Profitable Hospitality with another review of Facebook Privacy. Inevitably
Facebook has changed this around and the control panel for upgrading your privacy has been
considerably redesigned. So I’m gonna have a quick look at that.
But first a reminder, how much do people see on your profile if they’re not one of your
approved Facebook friends. So, this is all people would see about me. You can see there’s
a link to my website, my Twitter account, but basically that’s all people are able
to see and it really surprises me how open a lot of people have their profile because
usually they don’t realize that’s the case and something for you to think about
as a professional. Also, to alert your staff and get them really thinking about the situation.
So, that’s me that can be seen to people who are not my friends. Because once you got
your privacy logged in, you can then feel comfortable about boldly using Facebook as
a business tool creating Facebook pages and using it for marketing because people cannot
see who owns the Facebook page normally. So you can keep your personal privacy quite separate
to your business use.
Anyway, let’s have a look inside of these settings. Ok, so now I’m on the inside and
this where I can have conversations with friends and family and I quite enjoy that ----- Facebook,
but we’re looking at privacy now.
So, I go to the top right hand of the screen. You see the little arrow there and click on
that and come down to privacy settings. You can see now that my basic setting is that,
the default setting is that only friends can see status updates and my photos, ok. This
is simpler than it was before Facebook’s recent changes. But, there are still some
other settings you might want to look at as well.
So, if you click on this once, then here, here you connect, let’s have a look at that
one, gives you a few different options. You can see that some of those it’s not completely
possible to lock down and no one can send you messages. So this one you know, friends
can send you a message, but you can consider those options there.
Tags is something else people sometimes have concerns about, people may tag you on a photo,
they took the photo and put it onto their Facebook profile, and they might wanna tag
you in it. You can control it. So here you got, so I allowed people to tag my photos
but I’m not allowing them to tag posts about me. Can people check me into places using
mobile places and yes they can do that. So I can turn those on and off as you want.
And you can see down the bottom here there’s another option here. You may wanna block certain
people or certain applications such as you might not wanna play Mafia Wars or Farmville
or something like that. You can stop people sending invitations to that.
So, they are the basic changes to Facebook, it’s a simpler interface. But there are
still some settings here that you need to examine but once you get this settings right,
you’ll feel more secure about using Facebook as a business tool and keeping your own personal
privacy completely separate.
So, looking at the Profitable Hospitality Facebook page, it’s a business page. You
can see here, we got there posts, we got there updates. You can see that I am the admin here
because this is on my view of the page, and you as a non-admin wants a left right, top
right hand corner controls.
I have elected to make myself visible as the person who is to page down here but that’s
entirely optional. Let’s ----. So, normally people don’t know who are to page.
Ok, that’s Facebook privacy update from Ken Burgin, in this endless changes to Facebook.
It’s a very dynamic marketing tool. Lots of changes. We’re keeping you up-to-date
with all those on ProfitableHospitality.com. Thank you.
