come closer we're friendly
I'm delighted to welcome you here today
to the second year of the tech for good awards
I hope that the Awards themselves will bring to fore lots of examples
of good apps and projects
where social benefit's been taken into account
I thought I'd give you a demonstration of the things I use my phone for
literally on a daily basis
I actually think back to May last year when I first got my phone
and I literally don't know how
I operated before I had this power in my pocket
I think these kinds of Awards are really important
because technology for technology's sake
is nothing really
and the thing that excites me about technology
is technology that makes a difference
technology that makes life better technology that helps social change
our precinct which was actually quite a nice precinct
was fast becoming a no go area banks weren't lending money
business were suffering and the community was suffering as well
we approached the council and opened an empty unit
which is literally next door to the fish and chip shop
and in the last two years we've got over 500
people who've never used the internet before
so, I've got here, what I'm hoping
is a 20 and a 10 - let's have a look
so whereas last year when I demonstrated an app
where you had to take a picture of something and it would do image recognition
we've moved on now you don't have to take the photo
you just wave it over the note he says - famous last words
Phone: ten pounds Robin: Ten pounds? Yeah?
we love the tech for goods awards because it's one way of showcasing
the work that's happening in those communities
that are getting people usually from deprived
communities without work
or who have lost touch with family and friends
to actually use the internet
to make a huge difference to their lives
today in particular the presentation
that Robin did was
mind-blowing and the opportunity to see
the things we're talking about in action
was something I hadn't done before
when you see it and make that personal link
to the technology and what it can do for someone in real life
I think the thing that struck me last year was the sheer variety of what was going on
there were awards given to people from all over the place
using technology in so many different ways to create opportunities for people
I'm hoping that on the back of this event
we're going to get some really great entries
we had 250 last year and we're going to aim
to get an awful lot more than that this year
there's no doubt about it
winning the Awards has given new impetus to us in our work at Lifelites
in twenty eleven we were able to complete 17 projects in children's hospices
just to put that in contextÉ the most we'd ever done before was 12
starting from rock bottom in a derelict unit
to winning an award as prestigious as that
it's raised our profile and made
partners we work with sit up and take notice
