hey what's up everybody my name's Jasper Thayer
Apple certified trainer for Final Cut Pro and developer
Final Cut Pro 10 dotnet in this lesson will be going over media storage options
in Final Cut Pro
version 10.10 before you can begin organizing and editing your project
first step is to import footage from your camera her hard drive
into a designated library containing one or more bands
you'll be introduced a ban on corporate important when do in this lesson
but I really just wanna show you how and where
media files are managed and stored so that you can make the best choices on
how to manage media in your own workflow
first let's close Final Cut Pro for many
and take a look at a Finder window see can see a little bit in my setup
from the Finder window you can see there have a device named
Final Cut Pro 10 media this is an SSD hard drive
that has all the media I'll be using for this tutorial series
a chose to place the media on this hard drive because it when the fastest rides
I have since it's a solid state drive
and it's connected on a fast PCI bus on the Mac Pro
I also have another SSD named
OSX that is set up for my operating system and applications
this hard drive is also connected to the PCI bus
which is a faster connection then just use regular say to
finally there's a third device named
raid which is actually three 7200 rpm CD drives
strike together in a raid for faster performance and higher capacity
use in a terminal command a change the location of my user accounts home folder
and maverick's
2.2 the braid device so that I can store 6 terabytes update on the raid
write-ins movies another large data files why use in a small space available
on the SSD for the operating system
you can see them when I add a folder to the
movies folder in the sidebar that the same folder is now available on the raid
it when I go to the raid and delete the folder
then that folders no longer available on the movies folder on the sidebar
the point in famine so many different devices in my hardware configuration
is to separate my media in order to maximize performance
by separating my media from operating system
and spread the load on hard drives which allows me to process data pastor
you may be used in a system that only has one hard drive
dedicated for both media storage endure operating system
perhaps you have laptop or nine act that you're editing on
you'll just have to make do with what you got but you might wanna look in a
set number method that allows you to separate your data from your system
okay now let's go back to Final Cut Pro
to import media click important media button at the leptin did the toolbar
the import window appears with the list of all your important targets along the
left side
their sections labeled cameras devices
in favorites will select the Final Cut Pro 10 media device from the left hand
column
and the father I have been there named Hollywood will appear in the Browse list
click the disclosure triangle next to the hollywood folder
slept in and clip will load it into the viewer directly about
you can play a clip by pressing the spacebar for this lesson
moment can import a single clip just so that I can make some key points about
media storage
with anyclip selected click the Import Selected button
a pop-up window appears with the list of options
the first decision makers what I bet you're gonna import footage into you
you can only import media into a Benz
in defense is stored within my brace you choose to import the media into an
existing a Ben
or you can create a new urban will at the club to an existing them for now
this determines where you meet you will be placed in Final Cut Pro
there's an area labeled media storage that determines where you media will be
placed
in the max binder it's where you media files are physically stored on your hard
drive
let's start with where we want the media do appear within Final Cut Pro
you have two options for this you can either have you media added to an
existing the Ben
or you can add you needed to new event that you create
if you click the add to existing the band pop-up menu
you'll see a list available offense that you can import median to you
just above the ban are the names have the library defense belong to you
in the previous lesson on work with libraries we created a library called
LA locations then proceeded to create three events based on three locations in
LA area
choose the library want the event to reside in from this pop-up menu
will choose to say this clip in a Hollywood event
before we go any further I want to talk really quick about the type to media
devices you'll be importing from
in most cases you'll be importing video audio
or still images directly from the camera's memory card
or duplicated the cameras card call the camera archive
in other cases you'll be imported directly from an attached storage device
such as an external hard drive with the media files
already exist in a predetermined directory structure
I'm gonna be in *** clips that I already have named it set up
in a folder named Hollywood on my external hard drive
basically I imported these clips from GoPro camera
and brought them in a compressor to transcode the footage programs for teach
you
then I have renamed each clip copy and my external SSD Drive
later on all talk a little more about transcoding footage
brokers why you might wanna do it for your clips
let's look at where the media were actually reside on your hard drive
use and options listed next to media storage
you have two choices for media coming directly from cam cards when important
bank a pro
one you can either copy the media directly into the library bundle
or to you you could choose to copy the media to any location outside the
library
so if you choose the default option copy files into you
Final Cut Pro will do just that it will copy all the media files from the camera
card or cam archive
in the library select from this man
if you click the pop-up menu and select choose you select the driver folder
where the media gets copy to you
Final Cut Pro with them reference these external to copy files
the important thing to understand here is the copy files
into lets you choose library or an external folder on the hard drive
either way Final Cut Pro will be making copies a view media
in the targeted location if you're importing from camera
media card or camera archive these your only two options
you could also leave files in place if your media already exist on a hard drive
you want to import from
since I already have my clips in a folder on an external hard drive
of cheese this option in future lessons I'll be talking more about the other
import options listed below
but for now I really just wanted real in the concept
a medias managed in Final Cut Pro
the core concept you should get added this lesson is that there's different
options
for how your media is copied on your hard drive when the import your clips in
the Final Cut Pro
sometimes will be important clips from your camera in other times will be
imported clothes are
the exist on your hard drive you want to know how these clips imported in Final
Cut Pro during import process
whether or not copy the files are made during the import process
if you already have your media available on an external hard drive
the probably don't wanna make copies files during import
in my case I already have all my media copied on an external hard drive
salt used options to the files in place
you should understand the differences between copying files to your library
versus leaving piles in place if I do you choose to copy the files to
MyLibrary
then I could take the whole library file give it to somebody else
then what have any trouble opening up the project because all the files I
imported into the library would be included in the library bundle
the library Bundle file would also become very large though
I have almost 100 gigs eclipse all be working on
if I copied these clips in my library the library Bundle file would be 100
gigs large
if I already have all my clips on an external hard drive
then it doesn't make any sense to copy them in my library
but I need to remember to give someone the files I have fun external drive
if I need to pass my final cut pro project on anyone else
the way are currently have my library setup if I word important new clips from
the camera
the Nike choose to copy the files in Final Cut Pro
them from the drop-down menu I could shoes to copy newly imported files from
a camera
into the folder I already have set up with my existing clips
on my external hard drive when the import is complete
the media will reside on the drive by targeted but not in the library bundle
this way MyLibrary stays manage born size
because no veo media's actually copied into it
the library would manage these external files by using time
reference files stored within the library called symlinks
symlinks are basically aliases no cue track where you external media lives
so long as you don't move the media or on mount the drive
on one reminded that the downside to keep new media on an external location
is that when it comes time to hand off the library to another editor
there's a chance that they may have small fine clips appear in project
because media doesn't actually reside inside the library
also remember that these choices aren't set in stone
if you choose to import the medium leave the files in place on an external hard
drive
you can move it all in the library bundle later or vice versa
it's really important to understand the two storage options
they're available Final Cut Pro if you're importing media from cameras
card readers tape or cam archive
in copying the media directly into the library so that it's all in one bundle
then you have a managed library
cop in the media to a driver folder outside the library
is referred to as external media
let's imports media using both internally and externally managed media
so that you can see what happens let's copy the media directly to the library
well at a club to the hollywood a ban and choose the option to copy files
into that LA locations click Import
the Hollywood have been appears in the library's pain with the clip
we just imported right click on it and choose
reveal in Finder Final Cut Pro takes you to where the actual media file lives
inside the library bundle
if I scroll back to see the path to the file you can see the entire path
starting from
LA locations library bundle
then a breadcrumb trail taking you to the hollywood's folder
and fire me to the original media folder we can see your imported clip
this clip was copied directly into the library bundle
you can see the clip I originally imported still exist on my external
drive in
this location
if I right click on the dot FCP pondo file
and info the size of the file is 1.73 gigabytes
which is also the size the original media file that I copied in this library
1 point 21 chica wats points got
I can go back to Final Cut Pro right click on the clip in the browser
and then choose move the file to the trash
now if I close Final Cut Pro empty the trash
and look at the package contents for the library Bundle file
I can see that the clip no longer exist in the original media folder
the clip I originally imported still exist on my external drive though
so for my situation I like to set up my system to lead the files in their
original location
instead making copies because all my project files are already organized in
folder on my external hard drive
I just always remember that if I were to import any new clips from a camera
then I could choose to copy the files in Final Cut Pro
then like I said before from the drop down menu
I would choose to copy newly imported files from my camera
into the folder I already have set up with my existing clips
on my external hard drive
I'll choose to import the bike ride yellow Lambo clip
again but this time or choose to leave the files in place
you'll see that when I right click
I'll in Final Cut Pro in revealing finder in a Finder window displays the
location and
file on my external drive and not inside the library Bundle file
if I right click the library Bundle file here in
show package contents then you'll see that there's a small
alias file the references the location at media
I can right click this alias file in choose to
show original to see where the location and the true original file is for this
alias
if I go back to Final Cut Pro
right click this clip in shoes move to trash the Final Cut Pro 11 know them
move in the reference file did the trash
in the original file will remain in its original location
a press OK in their book at the Finder window and see that the alias file is no
longer in the library bundle
I'll check to make sure the original file for that bike ride yellow Lambo
is still in the original location and it is
the bottom line is that they're always be a quote unquote
file in the original media folder for the library bundles content
whether there's actually a copy the originally imported media
or there's a nearly as reference file depends on what choices he made for
managing media
okay so now that you know all this then
what option should you choose internal media storage with everything saved in a
library Bundle file
or external media storage we have a library file
in the media files are stored in a separate location it all boils down your
workflow
if you're working on a small project it might make more sense to have Final Cut
Pro copy the media files directly into the library
as this option will make moving copying in archiving your offensive projects
easy
because everything is self contained in one transportable library bundle
now let's say you working on a large project like
TV series er documentary where editors of a need to share media across
libraries when they're collaborating
copying all the median the library will not be practical
since you travel on media to import and if all the media were copied
your one my bird bundle you make it difficult for other editors to share the
same ET on the network
I'm gonna delete all the clips I imported earlier in this exercise
an empty my trash so that all start out with a clean slate on the next exercise
with just the library
offense and projects we created but no import eclipse
stay tuned for the next lesson
were also you different ways important media from a camera
