This is the West Pier, Brighton, now sadly destroyed.
When Goff sketched it and then etched it, it was only about 20 or 30 years old.
This is one of the calmer scenes that Goff depicted of the seafront.
He very cleverly highlights the magnificence of the architecture by adding very small figures
to the foreground so it makes the pier look even more majestic.
Of course it's slightly romanticised because you have the steaming boats there moored at
the West Pier.
So quite a romantic, gentle, beautiful image. It lacks the drama that some of his other
seaside views have.
