My name is Alan Smith
I am a lecturer in the Department of Surgery Division with speech pathology
I been here at UofL since 2008 as a faculty member
but I completed the program in speech pathology in my master’s degree in 2003.
I nominated Dr. Smith because I feel accomplished after every class I have with him,
after every quiz, every test, and every semester I had with him.
I like teaching. I like teaching specifically at speech pathology. I think it’s fun
It’s rewarding. I like to see the students take the information and run with it
because it wasn’t so long ago that I was sitting in those same seats. I know both perspectives now.
would say he’s pushed every student to their maximum potential and made them think on their own.
He’ll provide us with information in a basic overview, he’ll make you memorize the information
but then for exams and projects, he’ll give you case studies.
He’ll give you a page then he makes you apply the knowledge that he’s taught you
It’s not just regurgitation of knowledge. It’s really pushing you to succeed.
A lot of the students have let me know that the work is challenging, and it’s demanding
but I don’t see what they’re getting here at UofL as something that’s supposed to be easy
I don’t see their role as a therapist, their life as a therapist is not going to be easy
Everyday they’re going to have different challenges. they’re going to have to face a difficult parent
a difficult diagnosis, just a difficult case in general.
They have to be able to take that information
Just teaching them a concept and a theory in a classroom and asking them to regurgitate it on a test
that doesn’t work
We need people that are going to be able to be therapists, that are going to be master’s level clinicians
The work that they do in the classroom has to reflect that.
He absolutely gave me the confidence I needed when going into a clinical setting
I think having that knowledge and that background is so important
to then later be able to utilize it in the clinical setting and to have it readily available.
We have a great group of faculty members in our department
a lot of them are my mentors
Some of them had me as a student
To win an award like this, I was very shocked. I’m appreciative and humble at the same time.
