SteriPen Emergency UV Water Purifier Hey everyone, Tony the Filter Doctor here.
Today we’re looking at the SteriPen Emergency UV Water Purifier.
The concept here is really very simple. This unit uses powerful germicidal UV light to
zap microorganisms and kill them or render them completely harmless.
Simply turn the unit on and immerse it in water and approximately fifty seconds later
it will have zapped all of the microorganisms in sixteen ounces of water. If you have a
larger amount of water, about one liter, ninety seconds will effectively kill those microorganisms.
In fact, if this unit is used correctly, it exceeds the US EPA Standard for microbiological
water purification, and can effectively destroy 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses, and
99.9% of protozoa. It will zap them before they can zap you.
Now, it’s important to note that UV rays penetrate clear water better than turbid water.
Turbid water is water that has color to it. If it’s not perfectly clear, you may need
to pre-filter the water and in an emergency situation that might be something as simple
as pouring it through a cloth into another vessel to remove some of that color so that
the UV rays can be more effective. The bottom line here is, if you have cloudy
water or water with color, you need to either expose it to more UV rays or you need to pre-filter
that water to be sure that you get effective killing of the microorganisms.
As you can see, this unit is very small and lightweight. It’s highly portable and perfect
for emergency personnel or really anyone who’s taking water out of an unknown source where
microorganisms may be a problem. Again, this is the SteriPen, an emergency
UV water purifier, and I’m your host Tony the Filter Doctor.
Thanks for watching.
