hello everyone we're just a few weeks into school
a already I have so much good news to share the teachers scholars at
Cal Poly Pomona are nationally recognized recently
the University Center for Excellence in mathematics and science teaching
has been awarded National Science Foundation grant worth 7.7 million
dollars
the grant will help Cal Poly Pomona promote a new model for science
education
and the Pomona Unified School District congratulations to principal
investigator Nicole Wickler
and co-principal investigators Arlo Caine
and Paul Beardsley. To help build the future of our university
the annual fund launched an ambitious effort to raise seventy-five thousand
dollars in just 36 hours
in the first hour the reached 1/4 their goal
by the end of the drive donors had given more than eighty three thousand dollars
to programs across campus
many thanks to those on campus and in the greater community
for their belief in this university I also want to thank Dolores Ybarra
and Kayhan Ahmadi and the annual fun staff
for leading this creative and ambitious effort some of the brightest students
across the state
chose one of our own as their elected leader political science major
Devon Graves was elected chair the California State student association
he will lead CSSA board meetings served as an
advocate for students with the state legislature and attend CSU Board of
Trustees meetings
unfortunately I have some somber news to share as well
CSU trustee Pete Mehas died on September 28 he was from Fresno
that served as a chapin for all students across the state
he dedicated his professional career to improving education
at every level just last June he was on our campus celebrating commencement with
our students
pete was a personal friend and he will be sorely missed
this weekend we welcome home alumni involved with the Arabian Horse Center
we had an incredible weekend full of activities
including a reunion dinner tours and a special sunday Arabian horse show
in the coming weeks there are many opportunities for you to get involved
on campus as well on Tuesday October eight students can
enjoy good food and good company as they explore
ways to get involved on campus during the student life and cultural fest
our annual hot dog caper welcomes our community back to campus with the free
lunch
this year to celebrate the university's diamond anniversary
organizers will hide diamonds which can be traded in for great prizes
don't miss the event on Thursday October 10
if you wanna push your boundaries you've got to attend the
free lecture featuring nasa astronaut story musgrave
the lecture titled design a life for yourself
