Pride is absolutely an appropriate term.
I love North Texas State University, I love the University of North Texas
uh... there are some
uniquely special components
of this university
that are dear to me and dear to my family.
I had a unique opportunity
as i approached graduation from high school
to have offers to attend some major universities but uh... I always ... my
father said to me
I am not aware of any
5-foot-10
215-, 220-pound offensive guards.
I mean, you're there for a reason ...
it's a bridge
to something professionally, and you better not ever forget that.
And so I always had a question each time that I made a visit to a university
was to have someone in the school of business — and I knew I wanted to major in business but I
didn't know specifically which field.
And none of the other universities honored that request,
to have someone
spend some time with me. But North Texas did.
Was it a special opportunity to play football? Yes, absolutely.
But I had parents who said I was a student-athlete,
not an athlete-student.
This is a very special honor
to those upon whose shoulders that I stand
the other part of it is that it's a huge, huge
arm to the future, because it's all about these kids.
It's not about me,
it's not about you. ... It's about "What can you do
to make a difference in the lives of young people because
education
is a huge game changer."
