Ambassador Sullivan: Hello. Mbote!
My name is Stephanie Sullivan.
I’m the new U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of the Congo.
I’m honored that President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry
have entrusted me to represent the United States of America
in the Republic of the Congo, a regional leader and strong U.S. partner.
I’ve spent nearly half of my 30-year career working on Africa-related issues,
starting with my service as a Peace Corps Volunteer
when I taught English in Mbanza Mboma, on the other side of the Congo River,
some 50 miles from Brazzaville.
My husband, John, will be joining me in the Congo.
John Sullivan: Hello.
Stephanie and I are both delighted to return to the region.
For us, it’s like coming home.
Ambassador Sullivan: Our sons, Dan and Scott, have happy memories of our four years in Ghana.
They look forward to visiting us in the Congo
and are excited to learn more about your wonderful country.
Family’s very important to me.
I value the history and experience of those ancestors who came before us
and recognize that our generation is responsible for empowering the next generation,
starting with the youth, particularly girls.
Being a soccer player myself,
I also value how sports programs foster a healthy lifestyle and leadership skills in youth.
I look forward to partnering with you to further strengthen our bilateral relationship.
I’m interested in promoting three mutually beneficial goals:
further developing democratic institutions;
promoting economic development;
and improving regional security.
The United States is committed to strengthening its partnership with the government
and people of the Congo.
I look forward to working with you to pursue the many shared opportunities that lie ahead.
John Sullivan: We’ll see you soon.
