Hey, Nerdfighters! I'm Kristen, and the organization I want to feature for the Project for Awesome
is the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. ASAN is a disability rights organization run by
and for Autistic people, and you know what's awesome? Autistic people speaking for themselves!
ASAN means a lot to me because they invited me to Washington DC over the summer to learn
about disability rights advocacy and leadership skills, and I got to do some lobbying too!
One of my favorite parts of the trip to Washington DC was meeting Kathy Martinez of the Office
of Disability Employment Policy at the Department of Labor. At the end of the week, the other
participants and I got to put our skills that we learned during the week to use by lobbying
at Capitol Hill for some bills that are going through Congress that will help people with
disabilities. And some of us, myself included, got to even meet our Congressmen. But don't
just take my word for it about why ASAN is awesome! Check out what other people have
to say about ASAN and what ASAN does for them!
Thanks so much for watching! Please vote for the Autistic Self Advocacy Network and don't
forget to be awesome!"
