The sustainability of surfboards, the only real sustainable surfboard or eco-friendly surfboard
is a solid wood surfboard. That's just the reality.
I've been making surfboards for over 30 years. We've produce over 48,000 surfboards. I'm really interested in sustainability,
but there's a lot of myths about the manufacturing process and materials used in surfboards.
There's basically two resin systems, which is polyester resin and epoxy resin.
Epoxy can go on basically
just about any
type of surface,
so it's compatible with
basically two types of foam systems
There's toxic elements to all these materials.
And when you start getting into all these different polymers,
you start getting into pros and cons of each polymer
As far as waste
they have
acetone recycling
machines so
it turns into a solid waste,
which is basically the same as epoxy resin
There's really no difference. There is no clear-cut answer
It's your own personal choice.
Bessell designs we do more than surfboards.
We actually have a sustainability company called Bessell Living Systems where we recycle shipping containers into dwellings.
I really know about sustainability.
And when people talk to me about sustainable surfboards, basically I can't really talk about it--there are no real solutions right now.
And then I'm also a fine artist.
And we license other
artists like
Andy Warhol to produce
their images
on our surfboards
and that's what I do.
