Now I would be centering this one pound of clay to make a cup which will be this type
of cup. Kind of like a Japanese style tea cup and this is going to be made with leaving
a lot of clay on the bottom so I can carve a foot into it. The difference between this
kind of cup and a mug the mug has, it has a very flat bottom and it goes very thin down
here where the other one is where you leave it very thick. This one I just roll the edge,
this one I trim the edge. So I'm going to be centering for this type of cup. The centering
is the same for both cups but I just I just wanted to let you know which one I'm making.
To push it down first elbows in your hips, you push forward, squeeze into this hand.
So if you can think about that sixty percent of your pressure is coming from your back
hand, forty percent is coming from your front. You don't raise your hands up you are just
leaving them down and you squeeze and it brings the wobble of the clay up and then I take
my hand like this, that is called a karate chop method. And I bring it down still pushing
from this hand forward. If I stop that pushing what would happen is I will push too hard
on the top and I will get this I will get like this kind of mushroom shape here. Which
just does not work so you have to make sure you are still pushing here and also make sure
that the thumb is down across it. Now if I push hard enough and I keep my thumb down
I can center this with my one hand. I'm just going to squeeze that, I can push down like
that too, I don't have to use the karate chop because it is such a small piece of clay but
again if I want to use the karate chop I just do that. Just line it up with my hand alright
and that is center.
