Hello welcome to our presentation of the
"Summer Institute of Higher Learning".
My name is Cindy Boyer.
I serve as the Director of the Student Success
Center which oversees the institute.
Thank you for joining us today to hear about the advantages,
framework, and expected outcomes of the program.
As a student in the program you'll get to start college
early and earn six credit hours of general education
requirements in just five weeks.
You'll have the opportunity to work closely with your
professors and to become familiar with the campus and
all of the various supports and services that we offer.
You'll develop both your personal and academic skills,
while you're making friendships that will last a life time.
Admission to the institute is based upon your ACT composite
and your highschool GPA.
An ACT score of 20 or higher is required
as well as a highschool GPA
between 2.0 and 2.49.
Program requirements include receiving at least
a 2.5 GPA in your courses at EIU.
You may not receive below a grade of C in either of your
courses, so you will need to get at least one B.
It is our hope that you'll receive a 4.0 to build
that strong base as you enter in the fall.
You will be required to live on campus June 17th through
July 20th, but will be allowed to go home one weekend.
You'll have the opportunity to learn a great deal from your
peer learning assistants, who are here to show you the ropes
and help you both in and out of the classroom.
The keys to being successful in college are pretty simple.
Attend all of your classes, come to us if there's
a problem either in a class or outside of the classroom,
ask any and all questions and get involved.
In addition to your academic courses you will be taking a
success seminar to aid you in academic skill development,
increasing awareness of healthly lifestyle choices, exploring
careers and majors, learning how to plan and manage your time,
and library and research skill development.
You will also have the opportunity to have
lots of fun outside of the classroom as we are planning
many exciting activities in the evenings and on the weekends.
The summer institute staff is here to help you
with all of your needs.
Taisha Mikell serves as the program coordinator and
will oversee the programming and staff.
Merry Lucas is our assistant program coordinator who will
live with you in the residence hall, oversse the co-curricular
programming, and supervise the peer learning assistants.
The peer learning assistants are outstanding undergraduates who
will also live with you in the hall and serve as your mentors
and guides while you are here and into next year.
In terms of course work you will all be enrolled in English 1001
Composition and Language and then be given a choice of taking
either Intoductory Sociology or Cultural Geography.
You'll have the opportunity to hear directly from the
professors regarding these courses at the conclusion
of this presentation.
We ask families to encourage their student to seek support
independently, to set goals and stick to them,
to act responsibly attend all of their classes and their success
seminar and to check their EIU email account twice daily.
We expect that all of the students will make both
academic and social contacts, experience success in the
classroom, learn about campus, earn a college degree,
and leave as a satisfied alumni.
You will be taking two tests once you arrive on campus:
the Nelson-Denny Reading Test and the
College Student Inventory.
These tests will give us additional information to
help you achieve your goals.
During your stay at EIU this summer you are allowed to
return home for one weekend, you may bring your vehicle
to campus, and you will be living in Andrews Hall.
You will have the option to choose a different residence
hall and roommate for fall semster if you wish.
For further information you may visit one of
the following websites.
I look forward to meeting you in the near future.
