FAFSA Application tip #1 is to make sure that the student’s name on the FAFSA matches
the name as it shows on their Social Security card. So grab that Social Security card and
whatever’s on there, that’s the name you list on the FAFSA. First name, middle initial,
last name.
If the card says Timothy James Smith, but for 17 years everyone’s called him TJ, you
still list him on the FAFSA as Timothy J Smith – first name, middle initial, last name.
Understand this. The analysis bureau is going to link up your FAFSA application with your
Social Security number, and if the name and number that the Social Security Administration
has on file is different, even slightly different than what’s on the FAFSA, they’ll send
it back for corrections. That’ll cause a delay and you’ve gone to the back of the
line.
Most Financial Aid is first come, first-served. So you want to be at the head of the line.
Make sure that name on your student’s Social Security card matches what you list on the
FAFSA.
