After checking out some of the fashion of Berlin,
Theodore and I wanted to explore some of the best beauty products Berlin had to offer.
We met with local makeup artist Miriam Jacks, who created
JACKS Beauty Department.
So how long have you had
this shop?
Three and a half years now.
Yeah, I opened this store when I was
twenty-five.
I'm a makeup artist for eight years.
And I've been traveling so much, and I was doing my training in LA.
When I came back to Germany,
I really missed all the cool makeup shops, and whenever, like, I talk to colleagues of mine,
and friends,
and I work with my products I bought in LA, they were always like, "Oh my God, where did you
get it?" and "that's so nice."
And then I was all of a sudden, like, ok.
I need to do this shop, you know? It's really, like,
I couldn't find anything like that in Germany.
This is such a beautiful store. I'm like taking it all in.
Yeah. Do you want me to show you around a little? >>Yes! Please. I would love to see it.
We have a really, like, big selection
of rare products. I mean, especially for German people. The stuff you find here,
like you can't find anywhere else in Germany.
Some of the stuff, like the O-P-I nail polish,
of course, something like you have to have
because everyone wants to have the O-P-I nail polish,
but then we have products like Cosmetics a La Carte
where I'm the only shop in Germany who sells it. I'm traveling a lot, so I always,
like, when I find some nice products in any country,
I always, like, research, and like try the products, and if
I really like it, I get it for my shop.
How do you decide what you want to bring...
it's just based on what you really like?
I mean, the product
needs to be really good.
I'm very into natural, organic makeup stuff, but I also really like when the
product is super nice, you know? Like the Cowshed stuff. Like, when you have
something in your bathroom
that looks that nice, you know with all the kind of flowers and it smells good,
it's organic product, you know.
It's all-in-one. So I love finding stuff like that. >>So we walked in.
This is an amazing makeup space, but you have more than one space, correct? >>Correct.
Yeah, we have like this one back room I'm going to show you.
Oh, cool! After you.
Alright, come here in my little makeup space.
Of course, we didn't just want to talk to Miriam about makeup,
we also wanted to have her show us some basic makeup techniques she likes to use on her clients.

I was noticing that your brushes
have these really cool designs. Did you see this? >>It's like marbled almost. It's amazing!
Is this just what you do at your store? Cause this is like... I've never
seen this before. Have you seen anything like this?
Uh-uh.
One year ago I was working a lot on fashion shows. When you work with a lot
of people, stuff gets mixed up and especially on fashion shows. It's insane.
Like you have tons of people there and every brush is everywhere, and you go somewhere quickly
to do a touch-up or anything, and then your brush is missing. And I was like, there must be
a way to decorate your own
makeup brushes like that.
So, I came up with this idea and called all the brush factories in Germany and asked
them, like, can you just send me a clear wooden handle
so I can paint the brush handle by myself, and I can be creative like I want. I send
them back, and they gloss it, put the logo on, and the hair,
and then they send it back to me. >>Wow, so you do you make every single one of these yourself?
I do everything myself, yes.
You know, I'm a makeup artist. I love colors, and doing something like this, it's like
being a little child and like, playing around with colors. It's so much fun. So I really
want to keep doing it. If you want, I can show you how it looks, and maybe
you want to do you own brushes. It's very very easy, and it's a lot of fun. Let me get some colors so that
you can play around and you can create your own brush. Those are the handles
for the synthetic makeup brush, and for the powder brush.
And then you pick the colors you want.
So you're using acrylic paint.
Yeah, acrylic paint.
And then you just
roll the brushes through it.
And you know you can just really really go over it again and again,
so the color is going into each other.
That is so smart.
It's so cool.
If you don't really like it, you can always let it dry and then go over it with another color.
So fun. I feel like
I kind of want to do like white and pink, and maybe
glitter or something.
You always have to think,
on this side there's going to be the hair, you know? So there is the metal thing
and it comes over here like this much, you know? So, just try to concentrate
more on this area. >> Got it. Ok. Now you just have to roll them through
the color.
And then roll it back again.
Love that.
So, what are you going to do, Theodore? >>I want to do like a Palm Springs inspired look. Fun!
You see, it's a lot of color.
That's cool. You have to stick with the same glove on the color, otherwise you get it
all mixed up. >>Right. It looks nice!
Love that. So thank you so much for showing us this, Miriam.
You're are welcome. >>If someone wanted to buy these, where would they find them?
You can get them right now at my web shop, Jacks-beautydepartment.com
You can always email me and ask me >>Oh good.
And they'll be everywhere soon, I'm sure this is going to be the next big thing because I think it's amazing. >>Absolutely Thanks so much, guys, for being here!
Thank you so much. >>Thanks for having us! We'll finish up your brushes.
