You may know it as the buffalo, its real name is the bison. It's the largest land animal
in North America. There used to be many millions of this hump-backed mammal roaming the prairies
and foothills. Bison are dust-bath enthusiasts. They also love rubbing their heads, sometimes
even wearing their horns away. The gestation period is nine months. The red-brown calves
nurse throughout the summer and then graduate to the adult diet of grass and herbs.
In the winter, the bison have to settle for sedgews? and dry grass, which they dig out from under
the snow with sideways movements of their big heads. For more information about the
bison, why not contact the Canadian Wildlife Service in Ottawa.
