The piping plover is a small shore bird that nests only in North America: in Canada, on
the Atlantic coast and on lakeshores and river sandbars in the Prairies. It has virtually
disappeared from The Great Lakes. Eggs are laid in a simple nest, straight from the sand
or gravel. Chicks emerge already covered in down and ready to feed on their own. The plover
most serious threat is human beings. it is officially endangered in Canada. Efforts are
under way to protect the piping plover, but without the cooperation of beach-goers, farmers,
ranchers, fishermen and users of off-road vehicles, this spirited little shore bird
may become extinct in Canada. For more information on the piping plover, write to the Canadian
Wildlife Service in Ottawa. K1A 0H3.
