Dr Scott Schumann with Mark Grim Mark: Hello and welcome to America's Premier
Experts. Iím your host, Mark Grim. America's Premier Experts brings together the best and
brightest minds to offer solutions to your problems. Our premier expert today is dentist
grove city ohio 43123 Dr. Scott Schuman, an expert in sedation dentistry and owner of
Grove City Dental 4079 Gantz Rd. Suite A. Grove City, Ohio 43123 614-801-1000.
Dr. Schuman: How are you doing, Mark? It is great to be here.
Mark: You know an awful lot about sedation and lately people are curious about it. It is
a very important topic and you are an expert in it. What exactly is sedation dentistry?
Dr. Schuman: Well, sedation dentistry is phenomenal thatís what it is. We have a lot of people
from Columbus, Ohio and Grove City, Ohio and surrounding areas and they are scared, really they are 0:00:53.319,0:00:58.850very scared to come in. But at the same time they are suffering from pain, embarrassment, and they
can not eat. Mark: What are they scared of?
Dr. Schumann: Some are more scared from past experiences from these old dentists that you
hear these stories and it does not make sense, or stories their mothers told them about and
transfer their fears to them. Mark: I am amazed that some people have never
been to a dentist. If you need a denist in Grove City Oh go see Dr. Scott Schumann.
Dr. Schumann: It is amazing how half the people do not even go to the dentist; how people
with insurance do not even go to the dentist. Mark: So what does sedation dentistry do?
Dr. Schumann: What it really does is that it just removes the fear and remove the obstacles
that are preventing you from coming in. What we do is we get some pills, we get some wonderful
gas or some laughing gas, and you go to Lala land. Next thing you know, we will take care
of all your issues. One visit - or maybe two- and the time just flies by.
It is a wonderful thing for people who are afraid or for those who are just too busy;
they are either always traveling or theyíre working. They go to work on Friday, Iíll
get you up in the afternoon, and weíll take care of you; weíll catch up fifteen years
in one afternoon. Itís a beautiful thing and youíre not really aware of what is going
on. Weíll dim the lights, weíll get blankets,
weíll make you comfortable, and then the next thing ñ you think itís over. Weíve
been working four to five hours just doing everything and itís wonderful.
Mark: Youíre talking about four to five hours in the chair?
Dr. Schuman: We'll be doing a whole bunch of different things like one hour of this
ñ itís just one afternoon. Mark: Obviously, if fearís an issue you limit
instead of doing eight or nine appointments ñ you can do it in one if itís a date. All
of a sudden, what is this mouth weíre seeing here?
Dr. Schuman: Gorgeous when weíre done. Beforehand it is sad; I mean there are chipped stuff,
old stuff, and old gray fillings. There are gum issues; if you need teeth removed that
are not doing so well before. When we get done, everythingís white, everythingís working
together, they can start eating again ñ itís a good thing.
Mark: It makes sense. Obviously, thereís a thing in going and do it all at once rather
that shoot somebody in a typical thing or something like that. It makes more sense:
you get more done in period time Dr. Schuman: Itís something like getting
shots, I donít know if you know that. So anyway, the thing is people donít remember
getting shots so itís a wonderful thing. Mark: Give me some of the success stories.
Dr. Schuman: We had one that came in by mistake. She was a translator and she was working this
drug test down the hall. She came in and she was shaking and we were like ìAre you okay?î
She is not on our schedule, it was a mistake, and she had gaps; her teeth were loose when
she was talking. She cried the whole time; I said to just go
over to the back. She was crying, upset, worried ñ next thing you know, due to sedation dentistry,
new set of teeth and she was smiling. A month or two later, we had a phenomenal relationship
and she just told us that she got married where she wasnít able to do that beforehand.
We had another guy and it took him three times even just to walk in to the office to fill
out the form; he kept going back out and kept going back out. He goes Scott, do have one
of those tooth suits?î I didnít know what he was talking about and he was just ìYou
know, the one that you just put on and go by the street cornerÖî and I said ìNo.î
He said ìListen, if you give one of those, Iíll put it on, go to the street corner,
and Iíll wave for you.î Mark: I could just picture it ñ I know itís
not funny, but imagine the scene where heís walking up behind you back and forth of your
door waiting to go in and he wonít go in. Youíre really changing people is live and
we have touched on that. You are not really about dentistry and you about changing peopleís
lives with the art of dentistry. Dr. Schuman: Right. Itís a bigger picture
here and weíre not trying to have fillings with that. Weíre just trying to come up with
a game plan like whatever goal you may have, like I just want to have a brighter smile
ñ I just want to eat. Some people have loose dentures, their bones are sore and they canít
eat and their dentures are moving around. With a couple of implants, next thing they
just snap in and they can talk with confidence, they eat with confidence, they feel better;
theyíre starting to chew things better and their healthís better. It really can be the
bigger picture by trying to help people. Mark: I hear the term implant a lot now.
What exactly is an implant? Dr. Schumann: Just think of it as an artificial
root that we insert into the jaw and it integrates. The next thing you know, we can put something
that stays in all the time or something that snaps in and out, so no more goo to keep those
dentures in or something like that. It also stimulates the bones so you donít
get that desorption so for the little ladies with the really short jaw doesnít happen
anymore with implants. Itís wonderful, it doesnít hurt, and itís easy. Itís a wonderful
thing. Mark: Youíve really created this new patient
experience. Dr. Schumann: One thing we saw is that people
donít like coming to the dentist sometimes and I wanted to remove that. I put this team
together and these girls are amazing ñ we actually just won best team of the nation
of 1,200 offices. Phenomenal-award, we got to go to Disney and the Disney Institute and
things like that; they got extra training. Even this weekend theyíre at a demo convention
getting more techniques while Iím here getting an interview with you.
When you come in, they make you feel like youíre a friend. They laugh, have a good
time, and they take you to the whole process where we came up with a game plan. With our
technology, nobody has these stuff, but youíre able to see your whole mouth on the TV and
youíre going to see what we say what needs to be done. Youíre going to tell me what
you want to have done, come up with a game plan, we figure it out.
I get some gurus up front that maximize the insurance that you may or not have, and find
some payment options because thatís one of the obstacles. How much are you going to pay
for this? Where is the money coming from? We will let you pay for interest sometimes,
we had somebody who went up to 60 months ñ weíll find a way to fit your budget to get
yourself healthy. You get that for one sedation dentistry rather than a whole bunch of appointments
where I am going say a little bit, do a little bit and we are just going to get it done. It
makes life easier for you. Mark: There are some big problems in teeth.
These sodas and energy drinks, theyíre doing some damage, arenít they?
Dr. Schumann: They are and we use the ph which means acid level. What we have
found is that neutral water is at 7; battery acids at 1; pop, sports drinks, energy drinks,
all of it are at 3. People come in with beautiful teeth, they are
white and thereís nothing you can see; take the x-rays and you see some cavities between
the teeth. Itís all down to the acids. We say to everybody to stop drinking acids.
My friends call me Schu and I tell them ìDo the dew, pay the Schu.î Theyíre going to
laugh but I tell them ìNo, Iím begging you. Stop drinking it.î Youíre listening and
say ìThat is not going to happen.î Okay, just drink it through a straw, drink it really
fast, then have some water to get rid of that acid, and then floss your teeth.
Mark: I have taken ownership of your oral care and the teeth are one aspect to that.
Dr. Schuman: The whole thing is ëyou can pay me now, you can pay me later. If you
can take care of the small things ñ itís such a smaller amount of money. If you let
it big, it skyrockets it. We want you to do the small stuff; thatís the easier thing
to do and everybodyís happier. We try to do preventive; we try to get the word out
there where you can come in and try the little things so you donít take care of the big
things. Mark: Why has it taken so long for sedation
dentistry to take off given that the few years you spent there for so long?
Dr. Schuman: Well, sometimes it is the training involved. I had to do extra training, and
I did an extra year, I got the certifications, and the equipment you needed to buy to monitor
to keep it really safe. This is not anything like what unfortunately happened to Michael Jackson 0:08:34.939,0:08:41.419 occurring here; this is a very safe situation to where people are very comfortable. It is safe
but the training has to be there, your equipment has to be there, the technology has to be
there and it is an investment. Mark: How do people find you?
