Richard Holmes: On 22 June we bought together a group of young people to find out what their
concerns are to support our bid for lottery funding in the setting up of a young person's campaigning group.
Hello, my name is Charlotte, I'm registered blind and I live in Leeds.
It will be really good to work with people in my age group on campaigns that we are passionate
about because quite often given the nature of sight loss, a lot of the campaigners that
I have met have been quite a lot older than me so their motivation and their issues have
been different to mine.
So I'm really looking forward to working on issues that are common to younger people.
My name is Mohammed Billal Majeed, I'm from Manchester, I'm currently a student at the
Manchester College and this is my last year.
It's important for young people to get together because it gives people a chance to know each
other and socialise and to think about and reflect on what problems blind people have
and to share their ideas for how they tackle them.
My name is Harshadha and I'm from North-West London.
It often requires the contribution and if you like the force of many voices together
to call for change and that's why I think it's very important that we as young people
come together to express our needs and make sure that we empower ourselves to make these
changes for the future.
I'm Siobhan, I'm from Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.
I think it's about working in partnership with local authorities, local education, the job centre and anybody
that we come into contact with.
It's just about gaining more experience and giving them the knowledge that we have
and the expertise that we have for them to enable us to live as independently as possible.
I think it's a two way thing. If we let them know exactly what we need and our requirements,
it would be a lot easier because otherwise they're only guessing.
My name is Chris Reddington, I'm from Norwich, I am 20 years old and I'm currently a student.
I think it's really important for young people to come together and campaign because
it's a really great opportunity to meet other people, mix ideas, create an environment
where ideas can be propagated very easily.
It's from these events that you really get the new campaigns, the campaigns that succeed,
the campaigns that do really well, the campaigns that make a difference you know.
So it's very important to keep doing these and people make connections and people meet
and you get alliances formed that are unbreakable and can achieve fantastic things.
