Our top story this evening... North Korea has stepped up its condemnation
of the joint military drills between South Korea and the United States, threatening to
retaliate if the exercises continue. The newspaper of North Korea′s Workers′
Party, the Rodong Sinmun, on Saturday accused Seoul of shifting the responsibility of raising
tensions on the peninsula after South Korea said the drills, dubbed Ulchi Freedom Guardian,
were purely defensive in nature. It also said Pyongyang does not make empty
threats and would consider a physical response if it deems one necessary.
The paper added that North Korea′s sincere efforts to end inter-Korean hostilities had
been ignored by Seoul and Washington. The computer-assisted UFG simulation exercises
are designed to train South Korean and U.S. forces how to deal with a range of current
and future threats to the South.
