A volcano has erupted in Indonesia, shooting ash and rocks more than half a mile into the
air. After 400 years of lying dormant, this is the latest in a series of escalating reports
from Mount Sinabung.
Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes as the volcano has become increasingly
unstable over the past few weeks.
Geologists have been monitoring the activity.
We have seen volcanic ash spewing one kilometre high, and recorded it on the seismograph.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has now put the volcano
on high alert, and tourists are being warned to stay away.
People in the country are being urged to keep at least three miles away from the crater,
and more than 17,000 locals have fled in fear of their lives, but some people are determined
to stay.
This man says he needs to work, and is not afraid of the volcano. But as experts monitor
the latest developments, he may not have a choice for much longer.
