well comparatively i think a lot of the press is focused on the fact that women in other
countries
have reached the highest office in the land and there's been
questions as of late as to why it is that the united states is so far behind
%uh in terms of of comparing the u_s_ to other countries
it's very clear that that women in other countries take two dominant paths to the highest
leadership positions that are simply not available in the united states
so the first is familial replacement so if a husband or a brother dies
there's a tradition of a female taking that position and the second which is even more
common at this point
%uh is working your way through a parliamentary system rather than having
presidential elections where you run for the highest office in the land on on your own
you would actually work your way through the parliament
%uh gain a position of leadership within the party and then be propelled to that position
internally
so unfortunately neither of those options is available in the u_s_ which likely explains
why we're so far behind %uh many other countries
and in terms of actual progress
in women in public office in the united states
%uh a lot of people tend to think of progress as being %uh something that is on a trajectory
and it's always going forward
but i would actually argue that we've stalled we have been at sixteen percent
%uh women representation female representation in both the house and the senate
for over a decade %uh
in terms of statewide elective offices we're now down to less than a quarter
comprised of women and
that stem from a high of thirty percent in nineteen ninety two
so
it appears that we have seriously stalled in terms of upping the numbers and then to
buttress that there are attitudes and opinions that are shifting that don't benefit women
%uh we know that young people now
are less supportive of women in political leadership positions than the previous two
generations in fact
twenty five percent of young men and women believe that men
are better at leadership are better suited for leadership than women are
and even though men are more likely to say that a sizable number of of young women
also believe that so I think that
we're in a tenuous time in american politics in terms of female representation
