Who is defending the Social Security Disability Insurance program?
Hi I'm Marc Whitehead. A Board Certified Social Security Disability Attorney.
The higher the federal debt goes the harder it is to be a Social Security Disability attorney.
Over and over people have been taking shots at the SSDI system.
demanding cuts and changes, and talking about how the budget from the program is out of control
due to people abusing it.
Thankfully someone has finally spoken out from the other side.
Kathy Ruffings August report from the Center on budget and policy priorities.
not only points out the necessity of the SSDI program
she does a great job of tearing down the arguments of the people fighting against the Social Security Disability Insurance
Whats out of control is the Social Security Disability Rhetoric.
As a Social Security Disability Attorney, I've seen and argued many of the points Mrs. Ruffing makes in her report
But it's a lot easier to ignore those points when they're coming from me.
Here are the accusations opponents have made about the Social Security Disability System and
and how Mrs. Ruffing discounts them.
1- Spending is out of control
People have been saying this for years, but Ruffing clearly shows that the amount of money
money being spent and the number of cases are basically in line
with what people estimated, decades ago.
In short, we knew how much we needed and we just didn't plan well.
Secondly they claim increased costs are due to abuse.
But in fact, increased aren't due abuse but we now have a lot more older people then we did in the past
Many of them need help and they're not getting it from Medicare because of the retirement age increases.
Also more women are in the work force, that means that there are more people eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance.
Third, critics argue that too many people get Social Security Disability Insurance benefits
But in fact, only 41% of the people that apply receive benefits.
In fact, I'd argue that too few people get Social Security Disability
I've met lots of people who I feel should receive it, and don't.
