You've taken the prescription drug Actos to treat your type 2
diabetes for more than a year. Now you're suffering from
painful or frequent urination, blood in your urine, or perhaps
you've already been diagnosed by your doctor with bladder cancer.
Can these injuries be related to your use of the drug? My name is
Dan Burke and I can help you answer these questions.
Doctors have been prescribing Actos to patients since 1999.
It's part of a class of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes,
which also includes Avandia and Reslin.
Beginning in September 2010, federal
regulators began to look at the possibility of an association
between bladder cancer and the use of Actos. The FDA began a
study to assess safety concerns in September of 2010. By June of
2011, federal regulators in France and Germany removed Actos
from the shelves in those countries and the FDA issued a
safety alert. The safety alert said that Actos, number one,
should not be used with a past history of bladder cancer,
should not be used in patients currently with bladder cancer.
And the FDA, at that time, decided a new label and a new
warning should be placed on the drug that would state the use of
Actos for more than one year is associated with the risk of
bladder cancer. If you've been diagnosed with bladder cancer or
experiencing urination - or frequent urination or painful
urination - or blood in your urine, give me a call. I answer
these questions every day and I think I can help you out.
Thanks so much for your time and thanks for watching.
