Hi, this is root canal FAQ's. I'm Dr. David Wagner, Northwood Dental, Clear Water, Florida,
and we're going to talk about some of the frequently asked questions that I get, about
root canals. Probably the first thing that people ask about root canals, is how much
is it going to hurt? How long is it going to hurt? What amount of pain am I going to
have? Is it even bearable? Well sometimes yes, root canals can be very painful, and
we've all heard those horror stories, but nine times out of ten, or even more than that,
patients say, Wow, that's all there was to it? Roots canals, are usually very easy to
do, and are very beneficial treatment, to preserving the teeth, and structures of your
jaw, and your occlusion, the way you bite and chew food. What a root canal is, is after
a cavity has gone very deep and down into the pulp, or the nerve of the tooth. We call
this the nerve or the pulp chamber. It can actually cause it to die, and create an infection
out in the bone. If this is left too long unattended, a trapped infection, down inside
the bone, creates a lot of pressure, and what we call radiating pain. This is very painful,
and this is where the terrible horror stories about root canals, come from, but very commonly,
I'm able to make a small opening, go down inside the tooth, clean this out, put a special
filling down inside the root, and seal it up, which then later of course, we'll need
a crown, but patients say, that 's all there is to it? and that's all there is to root
canals, and frequently asked questions about them. I'm David Wagner, Northwood Dental,
Clearwater, Florida.
