Hello again. When Ken and Jeff designed Scrum, they designed it with three
equal and complementary roles. These roles are the Scrum Master, the Team,
and the Product Owner. I'd like to go through each one of these roles to
discuss them in a little bit more detail.
Let's start with the role of the Scrum Master. The Scrum Master is
responsible for removing any impediments that the team might have and they
enforce the scrum framework in making sure that the team is fully
functional and productive. The Scrum Master enables close cooperation
across all the different roles and functions, shields the team from any
consumer interference that they might encounter.
The Team.
The Team is a cross-functional unit who's ideal size is seven plus or minus
two team members, so that's five to nine members. The team has a right to
do whatever they need to do in order to meet the sprint goals. It's self-
organizing, and finally at the end of the sprint any work that they might
have achieved to the product owner so that he or she can either accept that
work or reject that work.
And finally the Product Owner. The Product Owner owns the vision or the
product or the desired outcomes of the project. The Product Owner is
responsible for the budget or the ROI, or the funding. They are responsible
for the product backlog and for ordering that product backlog. And a single
rank order often provides priority to lowest priority. At the end of the
sprint the Product Owner validates the work the team has done. And the
Product Owner does this by either accepting the work or rejecting the work
that the team has achieved. Finally, the Product Owner is responsible for
choosing product release dates and for distributing any content that might
be part of that release.
So these three roles are the only roles that are specified within Scrum.
Once again they are the Scrum Master, the Team, and the Product Owner.
Scrum is often described as being hard and disruptive. Part of this hard
and disruptive nature of Scrub arises from the three different roles. To
give you an idea and to get you thinking in the right direction, let me ask
you a question. What is the role of the Project Manager within Scrum? Until
next time, thank you very much.
