I love doing these commentaries
because they give me the opportunity to express views
that I otherwise wouldn't be able to express
on a daily basis.
And today, I have a particular ax to grind.
Have you noticed that the "New York Times"
has "all the news that's fit to print"
only when it decides to print it?
I've been baffled by stories
that appear days, even weeks, after a particular news event,
and there's no explanation given for the delay.
But then they don't feel
they have to provide an explanation
because it's the "New York Times."
And it's happened again today.
Today, front page, colored pictures, no less,
the first major news story
on the Antihomosexuality Bill in Uganda,
but that bill was introduced several months ago.
It's been debated ad nauseam.
To be sure, the "New York Times"
tries to put a particular twist on the story
by discussing the influence of three homophobic clerics
in the United States
who are stoking the fires of homophobia in Uganda,
but that, too, was discussed on MSNBC
and national public radio weeks ago.
I suppose it's useful to be reminded
of the ugly right-wing fundamentalism
in the United States
that funds and supports the ugly homophobia in Uganda,
just as George Bush funded and supported
the nonsensical obsession with abstinence in Uganda.
And we should probably congratulate
the "New York Times"
for catching up with the rest of us.
Maybe they should redesign the masthead to read:
"All the News That's Out of Print."
I'm Stephen Lewis.
