"What about Hinges?" It's a big question when it comes to buying kitchen cabinets. I'll
explain why. My name is Carter Chill and I'm with The Organized Cabinet.
As you are out there shopping for new kitchen cabinets, you're probably opening a lot of
cabinet doors, and all those cabinet doors require hinges. So hinge is one of those hardware
pieces that's going to have an impact on your final decisions. So I want to talk a little
bit about two different kinds of hinges. Now, first of all, this is more of a traditional
hinge that you would have found 30 or 40 years ago. It's an external hinge. It's an outside
hinge. It's called piano hinge. In this particular case, it's used on as a kind of an accent
piece. But the modern hinge design is for what's called a concealed hinge. Now concealed
hinge is simply hinge that's been designed to fit into the door so that it operates in
the way that closes the door without visibility. And also in this particular case, it's a self-closing
hinge which means it gets that far and it closes itself. The combination with that and
plastic poppers means you won't be woken up by your kid that's getting cereal at six o'clock
in the morning. This design is particularly suited for face frame cabinets although it
can be also used in frameless cabinets by which instead of being applied to the frame
of the kitchen cabinets, it's going to be applied directly to the wall of the kitchen
cabinet. They're all going to have this pocket hinge here that means that you're going to
have to have this door drilled out to accommodate that hinge in the case of a repair or re-facing
or some sort of other maintenance. I hope that answers some questions about hinges.
