European Union extends aid as the largest donor in Haiti. Following the 7.1 magnitude
earthquake one year ago that caused the loss of nearly a quarter million lives and some
€14 billion in structural damage, the European Union pledged €1.2 billion, becoming the
largest donor. About half of the funds have been spent so far on humanitarian and reconstruction
projects, including the provision of water, shelter and food, as well as paying teachers,
health workers and other civil servants, and reconstruction of the nation’s buildings
and roads. Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva conveyed the organization’s intention
to also assist in rebuilding livelihoods and social structures as she stated, “This is
where we are determined to make sure that we help Haiti to develop, so its resilience
[in the face of] future disasters goes up.”
Many thanks and Providence bless European Union for your uplifting spirit of generosity
extended to the noble-hearted Haitian people. Through such efforts as yours, may they soon
flourish once again in health, prosperity and happiness.
