The first Grinnell College Young Innovator for Social Justice Prize
awards were presented in October 2011 to James Kofi Annan with
Challenging Heights,
Boris Bulayev and Eric Glustrom with
Educate!, and
Rabbi Melissa Weintraub with Encounter.
The inspiring prize winners received their awards during a Herrick Chapel ceremony
to begin a full week of campus activities.
Throughout the week, the prize winners shared stories about their life's work
and perseverance.
They attended classes, met with students and community members,
and planned for Grinnell student internships in their organizations.
During formal presentations, the prize winners discussed their personal and
professional pursuit of social justice
and challenged the audience to jump into the deep end, take risks,
make a commitment,
and seek justice for all.
Morris Dees, founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, delivered the keynote
address.
