A family from Salford is seeking medical negligence compensation following a death that occurred
after a patient was given food and drink despite being classed as nil-by-mouth.
80-year-old Marion Sampler was admitted to Salford Royal Hospital after three weeks of
unexpected weight loss, but died from aspiration pneumonia after she was fed food and liquid,
despite documentation showing that that shouldn't happen.
At first, Marion's family had been sympathetic with the staff until the truth about her death
came out at Bolton Coroner's Court and they decided that this failure of basic care warranted
a medical negligence compensation claim.
Salford Royal Hospital has apologised for Marion's death and it was they who proactively
referred the matter to the coroner for investigation once the circumstances became clear.
