I think that the best way to explain how I focus on what I need for school is I do have
two older children, I have a 14-year-old and an 11-year-old; they kind of take care of themselves, but I do
have a 3-year-old, so I have to make sure that when it's time for me to actually focus
on something serious I need to do for school, I do it around his schedule. So, if it's when
he's taking a nap, then that's when I need to do it. When he's occupied playing and doesn't need
my 100% attention, that's when I'll focus on "okay, I'm gonna pull my book out and get
whatever work I can get done" cuz otherwise it's impossible because they want to be hanging
on your leg while you're at the computer. And you can't get stuff done. So, it's mainly
just managing around his time to where I have the time to do what I need to do. Of course,
in the evening is when I get a lot of stuff done because that's when everybody's asleep,
and it's quiet, and I can focus 100% on getting what I need to get done for school, you know, to be successful.
I decided to go back to school after getting laid off from work after being with the company
for 15 years, did not know what I was going to do but knew I had to get an education.
I didn't have a degree at that time, so it took a lot. I started out just taking one
class at a time, and slowly I realized that if I reallly want to finish this, I need to, you know, cram some more
credits in there, take as many classes as I can handle working full-time and having
kids. And a result of that, you know, I've set an awesome model for my children. I have
a 14-year-old in high school that's now taking some classes at BC and getting credits for
high school and for BC at the same time. She's also an honor roll student. She's in GATE
classes, so I think it's good for them to see how hard I'm working, and they see that
it takes time away from them because I do have to focus so much on getting school done,
but I think it sets a goal for them to where they won't have to do that to their children,
and they can actually go to school, you know, do it after high school and not have to do
it later on in life. But if someone did have to do it later on in life, it's not impossible
to do as long as you believe and, you know, stay focused, it can be done. It's POSSIBLE!
