Hello, we are WM Parkour
and this is the Roll Tutorial
Despite how simple the roll is often regarded as a technique
it actually consist in a set of complex movements for a proper execution
Having this in mind, we'll do a step by step analysis of the technical aspect
highlighting key moments to consider
Its useful to do a parabolic jump
seizing the forward momentum when reaching the floor.
Ideally, we should project our feet towards the reception point
whilst being careful not to pull back too much our center of mass
According to Newton's Third Law of Motion (action - reaction),
when applying force to a body, it will return
an equal force in opposite direction.
So, what happens when we fall?
In order to better explain the roll, we'll give a definition of damping/?
for a person making a drop reception
We'll say that damping is the capability to distribute in the longest
possible space-time interval, the weight force. What do I mean by this?
No clue, we'll add it later on off voice
*** tutorial
It means using our bodies to best distribute the forces
trying that the damping last as long as possible
When we flex our legs to create a proper "false weight"/?
we are dividing the force that the floor gives back in smaller forces in a certain timespan
For an ideal damping we'll seek to use every last resource
to reduce the impact
So, when we fall without flexing our legs we get hurt
because we let the floor give back our own weight force in a single instant
No engineering student was hurt during the filming of this tutorial... Probably
In a correct damping, a part of that force will be exchanged with the floor
In the first moment of reception, we should fall with a
"false weight", thus reducing the forces
that the floor gives back throughout our legs and avoiding any injuries
As complicated as it sound, it takes years of training to master and can always be improved
As time goes by
our bodies adapt, assimilating the best moments to better distribute the forces
Still, our bodies have not yet received the full force of the fall
we came with our center of mass pulled back;
Now is the time to let it
go forward as we flex our ankle joints, knee joints
and hip joints, in order to reduce the force with which we roll
The more vertical the fall, the more complex the roll will be
because we can not build on the momentum generated by the forward parabolic motion
Because of this the center of mass must be brought ahead of the feet prior to first contact with the floor
Our arms give direction, at the same time we'll place our hands this way
Which?
THIS! [joke]
Some of the impact is absorbed with our arms
(watch out, WRISTS!) [Learn Spanish to get reference]
To allow better support for the muscles covering the shoulder blade/scapula
-Here -going along the back diagonally
achieving a more continuous roll
As we go rolling diagonally on our backs,
our head should be tucked towards the opposite shoulder we used to roll, avoiding getting hit by the floor
the body should be as grouped as possible, thus obtaining a more suitable inertia
for carrying out a proper technique. An inertia as that of a sphere
It's important that the roll is continuous, not in parts
Here, we can see that the roll was not smooth, instead it received impact
at certain points
In this case, our body will have made a great exchange of forces in few points
hjsdfkghjxkc. Result:
We get hurt
On the other hand, this roll is fluid/smooth, so there's a better exchange of forces
Thus our body will be pleased with this impact
and it will invite it for a cup of tea
It's important to keep grouped during the roll
using the force of rotation to get up easily afterwards
and being able to continue running
Using the opposite leg to continue the roll can also help to get up faster
And if we add to this momentum the use of our arms, we will get up even more easily
This front roll movement
can also be used for other directions, although the position of our body varies
Even though this tutorial is an step by step analysis of the damping through the roll,
we would like to emphasize that it is a technique which has many uses
like vaulting over obstacles,
dodging, or simply
to EN-JOY IT
Hello, we are WM Parkour...
This is the Side-flip Tutorial, isn't it?
Not really... No
