This is artist Tara Reed and today I want to talk about how licensing your art is really maximizing your art pie.
Basically, licensing your art means you enter into a contractual agreement with a manufacturer
and you give them the right to use your art on their product
so on specific products, for a specific period of time.
You always maintain the copyrights and control to your art.
For example, this pie is made out of fabric with my designs - from the Play Your Song art collection.
The fabric people said we like this design and we want to put it on fabric.
So our license will be for this piece of the pie.
You now have the right to use the Play Your Song art on fabric.
I still have a lot of pie and I can still work with many other people.
Someone else came along and said, "We like this! We think it will work well for wall art prints"
So we did a contract and I said here is your piece of the pie.
You are the only one who can create wall art prints out of my Play Your Song art.
So I gave them this piece.
Then another company came along and we said we like it for coasters.
So I said, Ok, here we go, we'll do this contract and you get this piece of the pie.
But I still have more. People could create napkins out of it...
they could do dishes, they could do tote bags...
they could do any number of things.
So I've created one art collection and I have multiple people paying me to use my art on their product.
That is what I love about art licensing and when it's done well, you can make a very nice income.
having several people use the same art on different products.
If you'd like to learn more, please visit www.ArtLicensingInfo.com
There you can learn from me or other artists in the industry
about how to get started, how it works and see if it's a good fit for you.
Licensing isn't going to be for everyone but it is one great way to earn income from your art.
So thank you for listening to me and admiring my fabric pie...
Hopefully we'll meet again another day!
