Today, January 22, eminent ballet choreographer Mr. George Balanchine was born in 1904 in
St. Petersburg, Russia. Considered one of the greatest choreographers in the history
of ballet, Mr. Balanchine was the co-founder and the artistic director of the New York
City Ballet in the United States, one of the leading dance companies in the world. He is
known for combining modern concepts of ballet with classical ideals. Among his famous works
are “Don Quixote” and “The Nutcracker,” which is performed every year in New York
during the Christmas season. For his masterful talents, Mr. Balanchine received numerous
accolades, including the 1983 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States highest
civilian honor.
